George A. Kogut, 92, of Syracuse died January 3 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a brief illness. George worked for the A&P warehouses for 21 years and retired from the railroad after 19 years. An avid hunter and fisherman, George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret (Peg), his daughter, Victoria and her husband, Donald Kozera and his grandchildren, Jacob (Rachel) and Rachael (Roger). He also leaves behind his special goddaughter, Mary Alice Walrath and her husband, John as well as several nieces and nephews. Due to the ongoing pandemic, services through Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Sage Court at McHarrie Pointe, 7740 Meigs Road, Baldwinsville NY, 13027

John Paul Kozera Sydney It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of John Paul Kozera, age 77, on Thursday, July 4th, at home with family by his side. Born in Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Paul and Marie (Gagner) Kozera. John worked at the Steel Plant until his retirement. After he retired, John enjoyed walking his dog, Charlie, who passed many years before him, he also enjoyed reading and building models. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Elaine (Aucoin) Kozera; sons, Marc (Heather) Kozera, Westmount, Jason (Deanna) Kozera, New Waterford; daughter, Michelle (Dwayne) Symes. John is also survived by seven grandchildren, Dallas, Shannon, Maisie, Teyla, Alyssa, Ryan, Victoria, and one great grandson, Morgan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local SPCA in honor of his love of all animals. A special thank you to Dr. Carol Critchley, Dr. Paul Murphy, Dr. Jeanne Ferguson, for their care throughout his struggles. Extra special thank you to the staff of the Medicine Shop on Welton street for their amazing care over the years. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Pola was born in Troszyn, Poland on October 27, 1923 and came to Syracuse in 1949 to join her husband, Leon. Pola was a communicant of The Basilica of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Altar and Rosary Society, Sacred Heart Seniors and a member of Syracuse Polish Community Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Leon in 1980 and their infant son, Tadeus in1954. Gertrude M. Van Slyke, 89, passed away at the St. Camillus Center, on Monday, November 23, 2015 with her daughters by her side. She was the daughter of Charles and Mildred Horan. She was born in Utica on June 20, 1926. She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, William in 1982, her daughter, Patty Ann, sons, William Jr. and Thomas, and her brother, Chuck. Gert is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Dennis) Ryan, Donna Diamond and daughter-in-law, Mandy Van Slyke. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren; Patrick (Kim) Diamond, Lynn (Dan) Clifford, Colleen Ryan (Kevin), Dennis Ryan and Bill (Kara) Van Slyke. Gert loved all her children, especially her great grand children, Jhalen, Jhada, Ava, Michael, Dylan, Sammy, Brannon and Sean. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Mary and Lynette and many nieces and nephews. Gert left many friends at the Union Free School to cherish her memory. Gert was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and amazing friend to many. She was the life of any party, and it was always 5 o'clock somewhere according to Gert. Donna and Kathy would like to thank the staff of St. Camillus for the loving and compassionate care given to their mother that made her last days more comfortable. Services will be held at 12:30pm on Monday, November 30, 2015 at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr., Fairmount. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5pm on Sunday at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be private.
