In the two games, he's allowed one goal on 71 shots.

"I think they're a good hockey team, but I feel we could beat that team," Whalers coach Larry Pleau said. "I think we're playing the way we have to play. We're playing sound defensively and getting our chances, but we have to score." Not last night, anyway. Rochester took command of the game and possibly the series by scoring twice in the final 4:48 of the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Jim Jackson then added an empty-net goal in the final minute of the third period for the second straight night.

"They're playing the way they got to play, too," Pleau said. "But we have to get a little bit more territory in their zone. We got to dig up a little bit more somehow right in front of the net. "Plus we've got to hit the net. We're missing the net and it's not even like it's close.

We're four feet wide of the net when we're shooting the puck." The perfect example of the Whalers' futility came in the final three minutes. Brad Shaw picked up a rebound in the circle and tried to slide the puck into the far corner, but his shot ended up bouncing off the backboards near the corner. About a minute later, Stephen Leach was set up between the circles, but his blast intended for the upper corner smashed against the glass. "It's frustrating," said Whalers defenseman Grant Jennings, who assisted on Mike Millar's first-period goal a screened blast from the top of the circle that sailed by Puppa to tie the game at 1-1. "He goes down a lot and we're just not bearing down enough and we're making him look pretty good," Jennings said.

"He's making some good saves, but Pete (Sidorkiewicz) is making some big saves for us, too." Two got by Sidorkiewicz in the second period, but just one while he was in the net. Jayson Meyer scored the first one, firing a slap shot past Sidorkiewicz's glove after rookie Benoit Hogue beat veteran Bill Gardner on a faceoff in the Whalers' end. Hogue also beat Gardner on a faceoff in the Rochester zone for the goal that doomed the Whalers with 51 seconds left in the second period. Hogue pushed the puck into the Whalers' zone after getting around Gardner. Sidorkiewicz came out to play the puck and tried to shoot it off the boards.

Jackson knocked it down with his glove, secured it and fired it into the net from near the boards before Sidorkiewicz could return. "It's a lucky play any time you dump the puck out and someone jumps five feet in the air to knock it down," Sidorkiewicz said. "You can't say it's skill. You can say how lucky you are or how unlucky you are, but you've got to make your own breaks." Yanks beaten Continued from Page 1C Franco and yielded a single to Joe Carter to load the bases. Andre Thornton's sacrifice fly to left tied the game at 5-5 and Snyder followed with his game-winning single, scoring Franco from second base.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew he was going to score," said Snyder, who had extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double early in the game. "Being a player, I'd rather win by 10 runs," he said. "It's got to give us a little bit of confidence. I didn't even know how many they had won when they came to town. If they're on a streak, fine, because you've got to try to stop them anyway." Steve Carlton (2-2) got the victory despite allowing three runs on three hits in two innings in relief of Phil Niekro, who was seeking his 313th lifetime win.

Instead, Carlton got his 325th. The Indians led, 4-1, after seven innings behind the two-hit pitching of Niekro, 48. Team Pet.
